Matteo Berrettini bowed out of the ATP Finals with his head held high after beating Austrian Dominic Thiem in straight sets.

After beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic earlier on in the competition, fifth seed Dominic Thiem went into this match full of confidence, against Matteo Berrettini who lost in straight sets on Tuesday against Roger Federer. Thiem started the match with the service, with both players holding their services for six games.

It was the Italian who then broke first, winning all four points in the seventh game. Thiem wasn’t behind for long and broke straight back in the next game. The set was taken to a tie break with both players winning one more game each on their serve.

The tie break started off very one-sided, with Berrettini racing into a 4-0 lead early on, going within three points of taking the first set. Although Thiem won a few points to try and rescue the set, it was almost inevitable that he wouldn’t be able to wipe out the deficit considering that Berrettini had five set points at one stage.

The second set started off very much in the same vein at the first, with both players holding their serves early on. Berrettini made the breakthrough when he went 4-2 up and had the service to extend his lead to three games to go within one game of the match. Thiem won the eighth game to keep the match alive, although the writing was already on the wall.

The match finished 7-6, 6-3 in favour of the Italian.
