Roger Federer has admitted that he is planning to play in the clay-court season this year after he was dumped out of the Australian Open.

As reported on BBC Sport, the Swiss international was shocked by 20-year-old Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The youngster revealed that he used to watch videos of Federer when he was younger and Federer spoke highly of him after losing.

However, the 20-time Grand Slam winner is already planning ahead and wants to play on clay this year after skipping that part of the season for two consecutive years.

He said:

I’m in a phase where I want to have fun. It’s a bit of a desire. I don’t feel it is necessary to have a big break again. I’ve missed not doing it.

Federer chose not to play in the clay-court season for the last two seasons in order to focus on his health and fitness as there is a higher risk of picking up injuries on the clay surface.

But, he is ready to challenge Rafael Nadal’s dominance on the surface this year.
