Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni Nadal believes that his nephew will dominate the upcoming clay court season this year, according to a report on the Express.
The Spaniard has regained his world number one spot ahead of long-term rival Roger Federer and knows that he must be in top form during the clay tournaments to ensure that he remains as the number one.
Nadal returned to action from injury for Spain in the Davis Cup against Germany and played brilliantly to secure two singles wins over Alexander Zverev and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The 31-year-old is now preparing for the Monte Carlo Masters, a tournament which he has been hugely successful in during his professional career.
After the Davis Cup victory, Nadal’s uncle said:
The truth is that he beat Zverev, fourth player in the world, very clearly and it was not an easy task because the German won last year the Master 1000 of Rome, which means that he plays very well on this type of surface (clay).
The level that Rafael gave in the Davis Cup allows us to predict that he will have a very good year on clay.
Nadal has always preferred the clay surface and tends to perform better when playing on clay.
