Rafael Nadal has revealed that he immediately sent Roger Federer a message after Federer won the Australian Open last month, the Express report.
Federer, 36, defeated Marin Cilic in five sets to win his 20th Grand Slam, closing the gap on Nadal at the top of the world rankings in the process.
Even though the victory closed the gap on Nadal’s number one status, the Spaniard has revealed that he congratulated Federer as soon as he clinched victory, and admitted the pair have a ‘very good relationship’.
I immediately sent him a text message. I’ve had a very good relationship with Federer for years now. I was happy for him; I congratulated him and I told him I’m always happy when he does well.
With Nadal currently out injured, Federer is set to replace him as world number one if he reaches the Rotterdam Open semi-finals, which are set to begin on Monday.
Nadal also announced this week that he has signed up for The Queen’s Club Championships this summer, after missing the previous two tournaments with a wrist injury in 2016, and deciding to have more rest last year after his French Open triumph..
