Djokovic reveals plan to catch Federer and Nadal in world rankings
Former world number one Novak Djokovic has revealed his plan to overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to get back to the top of the world rankings, according to a report on the Express.
Djokovic has not been at the top of the pile since November 2016 due to persistent injury problems which have kept him sidelined for long periods.
After having surgery on his elbow, Djokovic has returned to action this year but has been unconvincing in many of the tournaments he has participated in.
The Serbian has been knocked out in the early rounds at Indian Wells, the Miami Open and the Monte Carlo Masters.
But he is hoping for a totally different story in this week’s Barcelona Open where he begins his campaign today.
Djokovic said:
The long-term goal is obviously trying to win [the] biggest tournaments of this sport and also to be the number one.
I’ve been in that position so many times, during 5-6 years on my [most] successful years. I believe I can get there again.
I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t prepared to play against Nadal. He won so many titles on this surface and keeps on dominating and improving, he is quite amazing.
Nadal understands that he must win the Barcelona Open to remain as the world number one, as Federer decided to sit out of the clay court season to prepare for the summer tournaments, especially Wimbledon.
