Great Britain’s Fed Cup team to travel to Japan for playoff
Great Britain’s Fed Cup team will travel to Japan in their World Group II playoff.
Topping their group in the Europe/Africa zone, the team progressed to the regional playoff against Hungary.
Singles victories from Johanna Konta and Heather Watson saw the team through that tie by a score of 2-0, and gave Britain the opportunity for the second year in a row to fight their way into the World Group – a place they haven’t been since 1993.
In last year’s World Group entry playoff, the team lost a tightly fought tie to Romania.
This year, the girls will face off against the Japanese team for a spot in the World Group II next year.
Japan came through their group against South Korea, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei to meet Kazakhstan in the playoff, a tie they would win 2-1.
Japan were lucky enough to be drawn as the home team for the World Group II playoff, and will be hoping to claim the first victory against the British in Fed Cup play – the current score being 2-0 to those flying the Union Jack.
The tie will take place over the weekend April 21-22.
